What is causing hiatal hernia with chest pain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I just had an EGD with a biopsy and polypectomy. It showed a hiatal hernia 2 cm. I am attaching photos. The doctor took biopsies and said there was no cancer. I have had breast cancer in the past. I am having pain in my chest when I swallow, and my sternum today. Will that subside? Is it from the bleeding? And taking Pantoprazole now. Can you recommend the best pill to take for this pain? And what should I take for this problem, what should I eat? Can you assure me there is no cancer?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through the reports of your endoscopy (attachment removed to protect patient identity), as per the endoscopy you do not have any evidence of cancer. Have you received the reports of biopsy? If so, please forward it. The medications you have taken are appropriate.

Investigations to be done

If symptoms persist, may consider doing a high-resolution manometry.

Treatment plan

Continue the same medications. May add Gaviscon (Alginic acid) tablet after major meals for one week.

Preventive measures

Refrain from lying down for at least for two hours after food. Elevate head end of the cot by six inches. Restrict citrus fruits. Restrict tea and coffee to two cups per day.
