Hi doctor,

I am 59 years old. My height is 5'8" and weight is 95 kg. I am not a diabetic or hypertensive. But, I have had anxiety attacks. My recent BP check showed 140/100 mmHg and the two follow up checks showed 160/100 mmHg and 140/100 mmHg. My doctor prescribed my Telma 20. I am also on Thyronorm 50 for hypothyroidism. Shall I try lifestyle modification?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

  • It is good to know that you are aware of lifestyle modification for controlling BP. Medicines are not the only treatment for hypertension.
  • Following lifestyle modifications can be tried.
  1. Reduce your weight to BMI (body mass index) less than 25.
  2. Decrease salt intake to roughly around half teaspoon in 24 hours diet.
  3. Avoid junk foods, stress and anxiety.
  4. Do regular exercise and have timely sleep.
  • Blood pressure check at home better reflects real blood pressure than doctor's office BP check.
  • Adhere to current anti-hypertensive medicine. If the above measures fail, then second anti-hypertensive can be added. For example, Amlodipine 10 mg daily after breakfast.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

  • If your BP remains persistently above 150/90 mmHg, then ask your doctor to add another medicine. But, first try lifestyle modification up to a month at least.
