Does a person with a high platelet count need a fitness certificate for cosmetic surgery?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My platelet count is high. I need clearance for cosmetic surgery? I had blood work done three times and it is dropping. I need help

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Following is my opinion on your question.

There are two possible causes of high platelet (thrombocytosis). One is essential thrombocytosis due to myeloproliferative neoplasm (blood cancer), and the second is high reactive platelet due to some inflammation or infection. In your second report (attachments removed to protect patient's identity), the platelet count has decreased, suggesting a reactive platelet increase.

In case of reactive platelet increase, it does not need clearance for cosmetic surgery, as per my opinion. So you need not worry about high platelet. However, protocol varies in different hospitals and follow your doctor's advice for further management.

I hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Best regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Would you be able to clear me for surgery?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Sorry, this platform is to guide medical issues. I cannot give you a clearance certificate here. Physical examination is a must before giving such a fitness certificate. You need to visit your doctor and discuss your issue.

I hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Best regards.
