Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 50-year-old male and have been taking a dietary supplement for hair loss for the past six months, which is rich in phytoestrogens. Unfortunately, my nipples started to grow, so I underwent hormonal tests. And now I am having a high level of prolactin. What could be the cause? Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I understand your concern.

Yes, it can be due to dietary supplements. So I suggest you to stop or lower the dose of your dietary supplement. But if you are not experiencing any symptoms, then it is fine. Enlarged breasts are called gynecomastia in males. So to rule out that, I have a few questions.

  1. When did you notice growth in the breasts?
  2. Do you have pain?

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

I noticed a growth in my nipples and some extra tissue over the past month after six months of dietary supplement usage. At first, it was fine as I always had a minimum of nearly invisible nipples, and to feel them more, it was fine, they were a bit sore, though, so I finished the pills I had and stopped the treatment, and made these blood exams which revealed high prolactin levels.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Nothing to worry about. You can repeat the test after one month and check. Most probably, the levels will decrease because you recently stopped the medicine. That is why the prolactin levels are still high, so you can wait for some time and repeat the test. If it still comes high, then treatment can be given accordingly.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
