I have high vitamin B12 levels. How to reduce it at 44?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 44-year-old female. For the last year, my B12 level has been constantly high between 1400 and 1500 pg/ml. I do not take any B12 supplement at all. My health seems to be perfectly fine, and I feel fit and active.

Sometimes, on the left side of my chest, I feel uneasiness. My stool is most of the time frothy.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

First of all, you should get investigated with a full CBC (complete blood count) with peripheral smear examination report to exclude any myeloproliferative neoplasm if present.

If liver or kidney disease is present, then B12 excretion is affected. So, liver or kidney disease has to be ruled out.

I suggest you do a few investigations to rule out liver and kidney diseases, such as:

  1. SGPT (serum glutamic-pyruvate transaminase) and SGOT (serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase).
  2. Total protein estimation.
  3. Serum urea.
  4. Creatinine estimation.
  5. eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) estimation.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
