What are the conditions for which hip replacement is indicated?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am experiencing hip strain. I had a total knee replacement eight weeks ago, and I am noticing groin and outer hip pain. The doctor did an MRI. Are they considering hip replacement? Can you help me understand the results of the MRI?

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you again for your time; I greatly appreciate it.

The X-rays are with the doctor, and I do not have a copy. He is considering a hip replacement, thinking it might help with the total knee recovery.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

After reviewing your MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) report (attachment removed to protect the patient’s identity), it appears there is 20 to 25 percent femoral under-coverage due to acetabular dysplasia. This developmental problem cannot be cured with conservative measures such as medicinal therapy. During weight-bearing, the femoral head needs complete support from the acetabulum, but in your case, there is a 25 percent deficiency. Therefore, to the best of my knowledge, total hip replacement (THR) is the only option to manage this condition. My opinion is based on your MRI report. However, it is advisable to share the complete clinical details of the patient. There seems to be an age discrepancy mentioned as two years, which I believe is not the case. Hence, please provide the full clinical details of the patient.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.
