Can a wife get HIV if her partner's test is negative?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had unprotected oral sex around two years back with a girl, and again I had sex last year with another girl. But the second time, I used a condom. I am married, and my wife is pregnant. I tested for HIV one month after that, and my result was negative. My wife tested this year after three months, and the result was negative.

Recently I faced chickenpox six months after testing. After four days of recovering from chickenpox, I got diarrhea and a fever for up to three days. Now I have recovered. But I feel very tired and weak. I am very ashamed of my past, and I am very anxious about whether I am HIV-infected or not. During chickenpox and after that, I sweat heavily in the daytime and occasionally at nighttime. I cannot take this stress anymore.

Please help me.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Following are the answers to your queries:

1) In both instances, firstly, oral sex and then protected sex (with a condom) carried negligible to no risk, respectively.

2) Your HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) negative test confirms the above statement.

3) It is reassuring to find out your wife's negative HIV status.

4) Having chicken pox does not imply HIV infection. It can occur in individuals who have not been vaccinated in childhood, and can occur even if vaccinated. It itself causes extreme lethargy, and diarrhea is one of the complications of it. The other symptoms you mentioned were also related to chicken pox.

5) If you have any doubt about further exposure, get yourself retested for HIV, and if there has been no other exposure, I am sure your HIV test will be negative again.

Hope your queries are answered.

If you still have any other questions, please revert.

Thank you.
