Can HIV be transmitted if condom breaks during sex?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My condom broke as soon as I put my penis in, and I immediately took it out. Can I still get HIV?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I understand your concern. The answer is, "yes, theoretically, it is possible." But, we need to consider various factors before we can make an assumption.

  1. The risk of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) transmission from male to female is more.
  2. Risk is more when the genitals have a breach in skin, as in case of injury, wound, sore, or crack. The breach in the skin gives direct access to the virus into the bloodstream.
  3. Risk is more in anal sex, as the chances of lacerations and injury to the genitals are more.
  4. The risk would be more if your partner had multiple partners.
  5. Risk is more if the partner already has other sexually transmitted diseases.

If these risk factors are not there in your case, the chances of getting HIV are almost nil.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
