Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I was on five days of PEP (Truvada), and on the fifth day, the condom broke during vaginal intercourse (I am male - insertive). So it's been around 30 hours. Am I at risk of exposure? Should I take something in addition to Truvada? Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to iclinq.com.
I understand your concern. Tablet Truvada (Emtricitabine & Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) is more than enough for post-exposure prophylaxis if taken within 72 hours of possible exposure. It is also important to undergo a nucleic acid test (usually done within ten days to four weeks of possible exposure) to rule out the possibility of infection within four to six weeks from the date of exposure, then at three months and six months after that. I would also suggest antibody testing within the next month, which is usually available as home kits, and provide the sample to a lab, and you will receive the results within the next 30 minutes. If your partner is infected, it is important to have them tested and to help them start the appropriate medication. I suggest consulting a doctor in person for further evaluation and testing.
Kindly follow the above advice as it will be helpful.
Thank you.
