Is there any chance of getting HIV if the condom breaks during intercourse?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had a condom broken incident during sex. I consulted a doctor for PEP (Post-exposure Prophylaxis). He given me a medicine Tenvir EM for 30 days . I started using it after 52 hours and I have completed the course. Now I have tested rapid HIV antibody test on the 52 day of exposure (22 days after finishing PEP) the result was negative and again I did HIV 1, HIV 2 antibody and p24 combo (ECLIA - Electrochemiluminescence Immunoassay) on 71 days (39 days after PEP) the result was negative. I know its not conclusive. Kindly tell me my chances of getting positive in the latter days? I am now at 80 days of exposure. Can I go for HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus ) RNA (Ribonucleic acid) pcr (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test after 80th day? or any should I do any other test. I have had light abdominal pain for the last few days and do not know if it is due to HIV or my anxiety. Kindly give some suggestions.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for the query. The chances of transmission of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) by single unprotected intercourse with an HIV-positive person are low. A broken condom can be considered as almost unprotected intercourse. You have been initiated with PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is a good thing. The HIV tests are negative repeatedly. The chances of HIV tests coming positive later are almost nil. HIV PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test may not be required now. It would be better to go for an HIV antibodies test after three months of exposure to be relieved of anxiety. The symptoms are non-specific. I suggest you relax, forget about this episode. Get involved in activities of your interest. Do yoga, meditation, and exercises.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Your reply will reduce my anxiety level. I will do the antibody test in 90 days. There is no good laboratory near my locality. Is it good to give a blood sample to a collection center? It is then sent to reputed laboratories in the nearby city.

Thank you.
