Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am HIV positive and my bones feel weaker than before. I have had two small fractures this year. Is HIV causing this? How can I strengthen my bones now, and should I be on supplements or medications to prevent further fractures?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concern.
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and some ART (antiretroviral therapy) can contribute to bone loss and increase fracture risk by affecting bone mineral density.
To strengthen your bones -
Prioritize a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, and engage in exercises like walking or resistance training.
Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol, as these weaken bones.
Calcium and vitamin D supplements can help you.
Regular monitoring and a tailored plan with your healthcare provider can help prevent further fractures.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
