Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am currently in a relationship with a girl. She recently got her HPV vaccine, and I was told that I was not allowed to have sexual intercourse with her for six months until her next shot. Since there is very little information on the internet and from her gynecologist, I want to ask you if it is true that we should not have sexual intercourse after the first shot of the HPV vaccine.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Most specialists say that partners who are new to each other should not have sexual intercourse after HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine and it is better to wait for the completion of three doses. However old partners can have sexual intercourse but should be avoided if one is not aware of the status of their infection. It is better to wait for a few weeks after vaccination since the vaccine contains antigens. HPV is infectious and can spread through kissing, penetrative sex, and through exchange or exposure to infected secretions. I would suggest you get screened for the infection and get treated or vaccinated.

Thank you.
