Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I need to know the real dangers of contracting HSV-2. I have had a kidney transplant.

Please help.

Answered by Dr. Yash Kathuria

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

So yes, a post-transplant person who is taking immuno-suppressive drugs may get certain viral infections, one of which is HSV-2 (herpes simplex virus). This is more common in the early post-transplant phase. When did you undergo a kidney transplant? Regarding the symptoms, it may cause genital lesions, which are mostly self-limiting. Other organ-specific complications are rare with this virus, so you do not need to worry. Please tell me about your transplant date and what medications you are taking at present.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

I had my kidney transplant a few months back. I take Prednisone and Azathioprine. My concern is the man I am dating has recently tested positive for HSV-2. And I need to understand my risks, if I contract this from him. I have had no issue with my transplant at all. I would like to have a fundamental understanding of what I may face if that should happen.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Since you are on immunosuppressive drugs, there are chances that you may contract HSV-2 (herpes simplex virus) from your partner and may manifest symptoms. The symptoms of HSV-2 are not very problematic compared to other viruses like CMV (cytomegalovirus), EBV (Epstein Barr virus), VZV (varicella-zoster virus), etc. You may get genital ulcers, which may be itchy and painful. So, I would advise your partner to use a condom while having sex to protect you from getting it. HSV-2 would not affect your graft per se. You may also get Acyclovir prophylaxis if you are sexually active after consultation with your specialist and get your partner treated as well.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
