Hydrocortisone is a medicinal form of the hormone cortisol. It reduces swelling, itching, and redness of skin seen in eczema, allergies, rashes, insect bites, and poison ivy. It is also used in conditions like thyroiditis, high blood calcium, rheumatoid arthritis, COPD, asthma, and adrenocortical insufficiency.
