Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 30-year-old woman, and I have been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, and it is so stressful. I cannot seem to find relief from anxiety, rapid heartbeat, and sudden weight loss. I read a few journals online about Synthroid, which is utilized for thyroid issues. However, I am unsure if the medication is suitable for hyperthyroidism. Can you please explain more about Synthroid and whether it could be a potential treatment for hyperthyroidism? Should I take the medicine for life? Will this provide a permanent solution for my condition? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query, and I can understand your concern.

Synthroid is a brand name for Levothyroxine, a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone Thyroxine (T4). It is primarily used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones. However, for hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), Synthroid is not typically used as it could exacerbate the condition by increasing thyroid hormone levels. Hyperthyroidism is usually treated with medications like Methimazole or Propylthiouracil to reduce the excessive production of thyroid hormones. So I suggest you consult with your endocrinologist to get further investigation and make the right decision. In such cases, surgical removal of the thyroid gland is recommended. Synthroid is used after the removal. However, you should make decisions together with your caring endocrinologist.

I hope this will help you.

Thank you.
