Is a skin lesion formed after trauma a post-inflammatory scar?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

One month ago, I noticed a small bump under my skin. I started poking it and injured the area around it. It bled as I tried to squeeze it. It has formed into a pink raised bump that does not seem to disappear. I went to two dermatologists who had confirmed that the lesion was not cancerous. However, I did cause some trauma to the area by popping it, squeezing it, and even scraping it off. The lesion is now pink in color, with no pain and itching. What is this condition called? Is it possible for a skin lesion to form after a trauma to the skin? Will the lesion stay like this or go away? Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It is a post-inflammatory scar that has occured due to excess scratching, rubbing, popping, and pricking the lesion. Avoid scratching and rubbing the lesion as it may cause secondary bacterial infection and deep permanent scars. I suggest you to follow the below treatment. Use Cream Nadibact (Nadifloxacin, Mometasone, Miconazole) twice daily for 15 days. Use Cream Scar end (Allantoin, Allium cepa extract , Heparin) applied at night for 20 days. Use Azac soap (Azelaic acid topical and Wheat germ oil topical) for bath for 1 month. Take Tablet Limcee 500 mg (Vitamin C and Sodium Ascorbate) once a day after breakfast for 30 days. Take Capsule Antoxid HC (Beta carotene, Zinc, Selenium, Manganese, Copper) one after food at night for 30 days. Maintain proper hygiene. I hope this helps. Kindly revert in case of further queries. Regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your response. Is it a scar? It has been two months since it started, and did not disappear since then. Does it look like a stretch mark? Is it permanent? Can it be a dermatofibroma? Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

It will take around six to nine months to fade away completely. It is a scar due to scratching or popping and not a dermatofibroma. I hope this helps. Regards.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your answer. What if it does not fade away completely, as this has been for months now. Is it a cause of concern? Please guide.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I suggest you do a self-examination, and look for changes in the lesion. If there are any alarming signs or symptoms, get a biopsy done to rule out malignancy. It does not appear to be malignant, so do not worry. Stay relaxed. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

If it is not cancerous, can it still be possible not to fade away and leave a mark or a scar? Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

There is a chance of about ten percent that it will never fade away. Therefore, please increase citrus fruits in your diet containing vitamin C, which helps heal lesions. I suggest you use capsule Zinc 100 mg after food at night for 30 days. Thank you.
