How to manage hypoglycemia episodes?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Yesterday, my 70-year-old father woke up at about 8 AM and was sitting on the sofa. Just a minute later, he began to lose consciousness and attempted to speak but was unable to do so. His body and hands started twisting, and some liquid began to come from his mouth. We immediately took him to the hospital, and his life was saved. My question is: what happened to him? He has been dealing with high blood pressure for the last 15 years.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have reviewed your health query and would like to add that such an episode of passing out can be due to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels), low or very high blood pressure, heart-related issues like a heart attack, and more. There is a diverse range of events that can be responsible for these kinds of issues. We need to investigate thoroughly to determine if there is anything related to the reasons I mentioned. A cardiologist must conduct a thorough evaluation of his heart and blood pressure status. An endocrinologist should assess whether there is any thyroid pathology or diabetes. I would also recommend a consultation with a neurologist to evaluate the status of the brain. Once these possibilities are ruled out, we can ascertain the cause of this episode.

I hope this helps. Please feel free to ask more questions if you need further assistance.

Regards.
