Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 30-year-old female who got married five years ago. I got pregnant, and in a routine test, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, and my thyroid stimulating hormone was 5 mIU/L. My gynecologist started a tablet of Levothyroxine 50 mcg, but after taking the medication, I felt diarrhea and palpitations. For that, I consulted an endocrinologist. My endocrinologist wrote a complete thyroid profile test and an antibody test. The antibody test was negative, and my TSH was up to 5, so he reduced my dose to 25 mcg and said to recheck my TSH after eight weeks. After eight weeks, my TSH was still high and the value was 3.97 mIU/L. He increased my Levothyroxine dose to 50 mcg and said to recheck my TSH after six weeks. Today my TSH is still high today, and the value is 4.03 mIU/L. I am very tense about my situation. Please suggest what I should do. Is it a very risky situation for my baby? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. I just read your query about your hypothyroidism and your pregnancy. Try to increase the dose of Levothyroxine to 75 mcg daily. As your pregnancy progresses, your requirement for thyroxine keeps increasing, so you need to keep repeating the thyroid function test every four weeks. Try to take it early in the morning on an empty stomach and do not have anything for the next hour. Space the thyroxine and iron supplements by four hours minimum.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

Regards.
