Why does the urinary frequency increase when I am stressed?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been experiencing frequent urination since last month, which usually occurs when I am very stressed. My father has suffered from bladder cancer because of his smoking habit, which made me anxious. On consultation with a doctor, I was prescribed antibiotics for UTI. I got better with the medication, and the symptoms almost disappeared. But this week, I am suffering from the same problem as I am very stressed again these days. The frequency of urine depends on my stress level. However, the texture of urine is very clear and of normal color. But I can feel some pressure in my pelvic region, which is not hurting. I had undergone surgery for a kidney problem approximately twenty years ago. The problem detected was with the canals. I had follow-ups with ultrasounds, and everything was normal when I got it done two years back.

Kindly guide.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thanks for consulting us.

You are suffering from a urinary infection unrelated to your previous surgery. Stress can increase the symptoms. Urine culture needs to be done, and then appropriate antibiotics need to be taken.

Precautions should be taken because of your family history of bladder cancer. You can take cranberry tablets twice daily. Yogurt drinks are helpful. It would be best to wipe after using the toilet from front to back, not back to front. Avoid constipation.

I hope you feel better soon. Let me know if you have any queries.

Kind regards.
