Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I feel that I am addicted to online casino games and betting sites. I have a gambling problem and I want to quit gambling. I lost a huge amount in gambling during my whole life. I want to quit gambling. What can I do please tell me. I am tired now. I am feeling depressed and sad. I am not focusing on my studies properly. Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Accepting the thing that this is your concern, is the first step towards recovery. You have realized that online games and betting sites are a problem for you. Otherwise, many people stays in denial and do not accept that they have a problem. This type of behavior addiction is very much similar to drug addiction.

Stay away from these sites as much as possible. Start spending your time with your hobbies. Spend time with your friends and family members. Maintain a diary each time you visit betting sites and record your emotions and thoughts just before and after visiting these sites. This will help you to realize what is the urge or emotion that leads you to go to betting site and then you can alter them.

Visit a nearby psychiatrist or psychologist for cognitive-behavioral therapy. This is a talk therapy where you are taught how to modify your addictive habits and how to restructure the thought process. This is quite helpful to modify your behavior.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I do not have much time for visiting psychiatrist clinic. That is why I consult with you online. The gambling problem leads to huge losses. But I want to improve myself. I understand that gambling does not give me anything. I am an M.Tech student. After this semester companies will come to college for campus interviews. I want to take a good placement in companies so that I am able to clear my gambling debt. I am tensed about my future and want to get rid of all these things. Please tell me what to do.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Nice to know that you have taken the first step to come out of your problem and that is realizing the problem. As you are a student focus on your studies and campus placement. Whenever thoughts come in your mind regarding gambling then just change your thought that you want good campus placement. Make a plan for today that does not have time for using online gaming and spend sufficient time for your hobbies and or for friends. Avoid such persons who ask you to play such games or just make a statement to him that you stopped playing it.

Start practice for campus placement including mock presentations. Clear your paper in time so that there is no more than one attempt. Make a list of four or five companies in which you want to join, study their aim objectives and working style and prepare yourself for this. You can take help from your seniors or faculty members.

Focus on your goal. See the bright future ahead. This will motivate you. Whenever you have irresistible feelings to play gambling then just stop using mobile or laptop or disconnect yourself from mobile. This will give you time to think again regarding playing gambling. Just do not play it out of sudden impulse.

Take healthy food. Avoid alcohol or tobacco products. Do regular exercise, go for a morning walk. Take adequate sleep. These things help you to come out of mild depression.

Remind yourself that you are the cream of society as a student. Many students only dream about it, so you will not let down your dream just because of one bad habit. You can do it. Try it.

If these things do not help you much (you can wait for two to three weeks to see the response) then try to meet a psychologist or psychiatrist for detail psychotherapy. As we cannot do all the things online.

I hope this helps.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
