What causes a color change in ovulation-related bleeding?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am trying to get pregnant and have been testing with a digital ovulation test kit. I have noticed that it shows high fertility for the past six days, but no peak yet. But right now, I bleed like I do during my period. What could be going on? Could this be ovulation bleeding? Also, I observed the bleeding is dark red at night and then changes to brown throughout the day. What could be the reason?

Please give your suggestions.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

High fertility is seen a few days before and after ovulation. It is during this period you can conceive. It detects by measuring the hormonal levels, which can be disturbed by any physiological mechanism, and not necessarily that a peak will be shown by that test even if the body is ovulating. Before ovulation, there is a peak of estrogen, and on its withdrawal, there can be bright red color spotting which is normal. But if there is heavy bleeding, the cause has to be ruled out.

I hope this was helpful.

Take care.
