What causes IBS? How to manage it?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Please explain about the causes of the IBS. How can it be managed? Please advice.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The exact cause of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is not known. The other causes are stress, anxiety, hormone changes, genetic factors, and infections such as salmonella. Treatment depends on the cause. We can do a blood test, hormonal test, coproculture, thyroid function test, colonoscopy, and test for celiac disease to identify the cause. After seeing the results, proper treatment can be planned. Stop taking caffeine and alcohol. Avoid eating fatty foods. Eat a fiber diet. It helps to get relief from constipation.
