How can we cure a kidney stone in the distal ureter?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My husband is having a severe pain in the stomach and spine for the past three days, and we took a scan today which says the right kidney measures 10.6 x 3.9 cm, left kidney measures 11.2 x 5.5 cm, calculus measuring 3 mm is noted in the left distal ureter, just proximal to the vesicoureteric junction, left distal ureteric calculus causing mild hydroureteronephrosis. Do this need surgery or can it be cured with medicine?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I would recommend taking more fluids because 3 mm stone in the distal ureter can pass on its own. He needs more fluids and pain medication. Another medication is Drotin 40 mg (Drotaverine hydrochloride) should be taken thrice daily for two to three days, which will help in passing the stone.
