How to effectively manage knee pain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

For the past twelve months, my knee has been painful. After I sit for a couple of hours, it continues to hurt, and when I try to stand, I cannot straighten up. The pain worsens whenever I cough or sneeze.

What could be causing this?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

You have been experiencing knee pain for the past year, but you have not mentioned whether you have taken any medications, undergone a physical examination, or had any investigations done. While it is possible for a patient to have both cough and knee pain at the same time, experiencing knee pain specifically while coughing, especially when the knees are at rest, while sitting, or lying down, is quite unusual and needs to be explained in more detail.

  1. Do you currently have a cough?
  2. If yes, for how long have you been suffering from it?
  3. Is there any history of joint- or blood-related diseases in your family?
  4. Do you or your family members have a history of asthma or tuberculosis?
  5. Was there any trauma or injury to your knee in the past?

One of the likely causes could be chondromalacia patellae, a condition where the cartilage under the kneecap becomes soft or damaged. Please also let me know if you are experiencing any other symptoms, have any known drug allergies, or have allergies to common allergens.

If you have undergone any investigations or physical examinations, or if you can provide more details about your illness, family history of diseases, or past medical history, I will be more than happy to assist you further.

I would suggest the following preventive measures: Working towards gradual weight reduction would be good. Each pound of weight loss can reduce the load on the knee by fourfold during daily activities and even more during physical exertion.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
