What measures can help reduce knee pain and swelling?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 24-year-old with a 5 feet height. I have been suffering from knee swelling for three months. It started as mild pain. But now, the knee swelling has increased even though I can stand and walk properly. I am currently taking Skelan as a medication. I had similar complaints two years back and took Clecoxib for pain. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read the query, and I can understand your concern.

Knee swelling, also known as knee edema, can be a symptom of various underlying conditions, such as injury, infection, arthritis, or fluid buildup due to heart or kidney problems. Consult your doctor to identify the underlying cause of the swelling and create a suitable treatment plan if your knee swelling has continued for several months and you are taking Skelan, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicine, to manage the pain. During your appointment, your healthcare provider may perform a physical exam and ask questions about your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle habits to help diagnose the cause of the knee swelling. They may also recommend additional tests or imaging studies to evaluate the condition. In the meantime, there are some steps you can take to manage knee swelling and promote joint health:

1. Rest the affected knee as much as possible to reduce stress on the joint.

2. Apply ice or cold packs to the knee for 15 to 20 minutes several times daily to help reduce inflammation and swelling.

3. Elevate the affected knee above heart level whenever possible to help reduce fluid buildup in the joint.

4. Exercise regularly to strengthen the muscles around the knee joint and improve joint flexibility. However, consult your healthcare provider before starting a new exercise program if you have underlying joint issues.

5. Maintain a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise to reduce stress on the knee joints.

6. Wear supportive knee braces or sleeves during physical activity or when performing tasks that put extra strain on the knees.

I hope this will help you.

Thank you.
