Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been thinking more and more about the possibility of being bipolar after a comment my friend made about me acting manic. I have noticed my mood fluctuating between extreme happiness, high energy, talkativeness, and confidence during the summer, to feeling extremely sad, worthless, and guilty during depressive episodes. I also experience difficulties in functioning and sometimes have thoughts of self-harm and suicide. Could this indicate bipolar disorder?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com. I read your query and understand your concern.

You might be experiencing borderline personality disorder rather than bipolar disorder (mania). Borderline personality disorder is characterized by a chronic sense of emptiness, emotional outbursts, impulsive behavior, and self-harming tendencies. People with this disorder often feel misunderstood and struggle to maintain long-term relationships. They may also face challenges in their professional life and have frequent anger outbursts. Non-pharmacological management is available, and you should consider the following guidelines:

1. Engage in daily exercise for 30 to45 minutes, such as taking a walk.

2. Practice daily meditation for 20 minutes. Find a comfortable position, focus on your breathing, and allow your thoughts to flow without trying to control them. This can help you relax.

3. Consume healthy, home-cooked meals and avoid junk foods.

4. Spend quality time with friends and family each day, whether in person or through video calls if you are separated geographically.

5. Dedicate time to creative hobbies like reading, journaling, painting, drawing, and acquiring new skills, languages, or musical talents.

6. Ensure you get 7 to 8 hours of sleep each day.

7. Stay away from tobacco, alcohol, or any substance abuse.

8. Live your life fully, do not just go through the motions.

Cultivate boldness and confidence in your journey. If you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to ask.
