Is it normal to have very low BP and faint in pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 23 years old and pregnant. I have been having serious issues with syncope. My blood pressure has been so low it scared my cardiologist. I got an echocardiogram, and it showed I had two mildly thickened valves and a dilated atrium. I am worried that this could affect me during labor, and I feel as though I should be closely monitored because I feel I am slowly going into preterm labor. Should my doctor be doing more? Lately, I have passed out at home and have not been able to breathe properly. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your cardiac ultrasound is within the normal range. Those findings (left atrium mild dilation and aortic valve leaflets thickening) do not have any clinical significance. Low blood pressure could be related to pregnancy or proteinuria. For this reason, I recommend performing a urine analysis for microalbuminuria. Anyway, there is no need to go into preterm labor as your heart is normal. I would just recommend some bed rest to avoid fainting.

I hope this helps.

Please revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
