Can vaping cause chest problems or lung cancer at age 25?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 25 years old and have been vaping daily since I was 18. Over the past few months, I have developed a persistent cough and chest tightness that I never had before, and my GP has referred me for a respiratory investigation. I switched to vaping believing it was safe, but I am now genuinely frightened about what seven years of daily use may have already done to my lungs.

  • Can vaping cause lung cancer at age 25?

  • Is there enough evidence that vaping alone can cause lung cancer in a 25-year-old?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I understand why this situation is worrying for you. Many people initially believed vaping was harmless, so it is quite common for patients in their twenties to feel anxious when they develop new respiratory symptoms after several years of regular use. A persistent cough and chest tightness should certainly be evaluated, and your general practitioner has done the right thing by referring you for further respiratory assessment.

To answer your main concern directly, lung cancer developing at the age of twenty-five purely from vaping would be considered extremely uncommon. Lung cancer generally develops after many years of cumulative cellular damage, often over decades rather than a few years. At present, there is no strong clinical evidence showing that vaping alone has already caused lung cancer in young adults after a relatively short duration, such as seven years.

However, that does not mean vaping is harmless to the lungs. E-cigarette aerosol contains several chemicals that can irritate and damage airway cells. These include:

  • Compounds are formed when the liquid is heated.

  • Very fine particles that deposit deep in the lungs.

  • Small amounts of metals from the device itself.

These substances can cause inflammation in the airways and oxidative stress in lung tissue, which are mechanisms known to contribute to long-term cellular injury. Because vaping is relatively new compared with cigarette smoking, doctors are still studying the long-term consequences over many years.

For people in your age group who develop a cough and chest tightness after vaping, the cause is likely to be airway irritation or inflammation rather than cancer. I've seen plenty of patients with a lingering cough, irritated airways, or worsening asthma linked to vaping, and in most cases, these symptoms settle once they stop vaping and give their lungs a chance to recover.

The respiratory evaluation your doctor has arranged will help clarify the cause of your symptoms. Tests such as lung function testing and chest imaging can usually identify whether there is airway inflammation or another treatable lung condition.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
