Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I am a 38-year-old male who was diagnosed with major depressive disorder last year. My first antidepressant was sertraline, and I took it for about four months because my psychiatrist advised me to be patient. Unfortunately, I am still feeling unmotivated, tired, and emotionally flat most days.
I am wondering if I should consider trying a different antidepressant since the first one did not seem to work. I have read that many people had to try multiple medications before finding the right one, but I cannot help but worry that maybe antidepressants just do not work for me at all.
Please guide.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I am deeply concerned about your worries.
I understand why you might feel discouraged after trying sertraline for nearly four months without seeing the improvement you hoped for. It is quite common for individuals with major depressive disorder to need multiple medication trials before finding the right treatment that works for them. A lack of response to the first antidepressant does not mean that antidepressants would not be effective for you in the future.
Your psychiatrist may consider several options, such as adjusting the dosage, switching to a different antidepressant, or even adding another medication or therapy approach.
Since you are still experiencing low motivation, fatigue, and emotional flatness, it would be wise to discuss these ongoing symptoms with your psychiatrist instead of continuing with a treatment that is not providing enough benefit.
Treating depression often involves some trial and adjustment. Many people who do not respond well to one medication eventually find improvement with another medication, psychotherapy, or a combination of both.
If you found this information helpful, I would greatly appreciate your feedback. Wishing you comfort and steady improvement ahead.
Thank you.
