Why do I have vomiting and pain despite taking medications for malaria?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was diagnosed with malaria yesterday. And I was given painkillers, medicines for vomiting and to kill the parasite. However, I still vomit and have severe pain. I visited the doctor today and was told to continue the medicines. However, I am a type 1 diabetic patient and I am afraid I am taking a low-dosage medicine to kill the parasite. What should I do?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Vomiting and muscle pain are common in malaria. I suggest strong anti-emetic like Zofran (Ondansetron) 8 mg injection in addition to strong pain killers like Ibuprofen 600 mg. Please note that uncontrolled blood sugar levels could contribute to vomiting and epigastric pain. Please provide me with your feedback. I will be more than happy to provide any further advice.
