How far back can meconium testing detect the presence of drugs in pregnant females?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am currently pregnant and have a question about meconium testing. I used marijuana a handful of times throughout the beginning of my pregnancy. It has been 19 weeks and three days since I stopped using it completely. I am really stressed about meconium testing. My question is, what is the absolute furthest that marijuana can be detected? Will my baby test positive?

Answered by Dr. Reetika

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Medically as per certain studies and international publications, meconium testing can detect maternal substance use for up to 4 to 5 months before delivery. For urine testing, it is a week. Please take care of your health and have a good diet and take adequate rest. It is good that you have completely stopped, as it will be good for your baby's health. You need to stop any kind of substance abuse, alcohol, and tobacco use, as well as unessential medicine use for your baby's good health.
