Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 27-year-old female. Last year, I took a drug for weight loss but I had to stop it after two to three days of usage because it was very strong for my body. Since then I noticed that I put up a lot of weight and started having late and longer periods. My period used to be for three days but it changed to seven days. For about three months my period stopped coming and now it started again and has refused to stop. Some days it acts like it is stopping but it starts again. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your question. I may need to know the constituents of the supplement you took if you still have it. From the information given the supplement may have impacted your hormonal levels. It is not uncommon for weight loss supplements to affect hormones hence they are not advised. Weight gain and heavier menstrual flow can be a symptom of hypothyroidism. I need to know if you also started feeling unusually cold even in warm environments and if people often remark that your skin is cold or clammy. Investigations that can be done include a thyroid function test and well as a hormonal profile. In the meantime, you should check your packed cell volume to ascertain if the blood loss is significant to require iron supplementation. You could also get a prescription for Tranexamic acid which can help reduce the volume of blood loss. I hope I have cleared all your doubts.

Thank you.
