Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have had a metallic taste in my mouth for the past several days. I brush my teeth twice a day and cannot see or feel any concerns apart from the metallic taste. I am currently taking the tablet Norgeston. Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I am here to help you with your queries.
There are several possible causes for experiencing a metallic taste in your mouth. Some of the most common reasons include the following.
1. Some medications, such as certain antibiotics, antihistamines, and blood pressure medications, can cause a metallic taste in your mouth as a side effect.
2. Poor oral hygiene, gum disease, or tooth infections can cause a metallic taste in your mouth. In some cases, metallic dental restorations (e.g., fillings, and crowns) can also contribute to a metallic taste.
3. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can sometimes cause a metallic taste in the mouth. This is usually a temporary condition and resolves after delivery.
4. Inflammation or infections in the nasal passages or sinuses can affect your sense of taste, leading to a metallic taste in your mouth.
5. Deficiencies in certain vitamins or minerals, such as vitamin B12, zinc, or iron, may cause a metallic taste in your mouth.
6. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux can cause stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus and mouth, leading to a metallic taste.
7. Not drinking enough water can cause a dry mouth, which can sometimes be accompanied by a metallic taste.
9. Ingesting or inhaling substances like lead, mercury, or other heavy metals can cause a metallic taste in your mouth.
According to your history, the most probable cause could be due to the medications that you take as they may cause a hormonal disturbance, so, please take your physician's opinion and ask your doctor to change it if possible.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
