Can my sister's sudden behavioral changes relate to Tegretol she has been taking for the past year?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My sister is 29-year-old, and since last year, she has been suffering from a mood disorder and was prescribed Tegretol. I am scared that this medication will change her personality. Since then, she has behaved like someone else, always shouting and keeps shaking her head. Is this due to the medication? Can I get an alternative for this medication? Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your sister's situation. Your sister has a mood disorder or psychosis. Your sister may have heard voices (auditory hallucination), and she is responding to that voices; that is why she keeps shouting and moving her head (hallucinatory behavior). She does not have medication side effects. I suggest adding another anti-psychotic tablet, Olanzapine 5 mg, at night to deal with it. Please do not stop any medication without a doctor's consultation; otherwise, it will worsen, and it will be difficult to treat her.

I hope that you get your answer. Please let me know if you want some help.

Thank you.
