Can recurrent muscle twitching with normal blood reports mean multiple sclerosis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had muscle twitching for two years and I also had pins and needles in both arms when asleep which resolved on positional change. I had nerve conduction studies which were normal. Both symptoms went away together. About six weeks ago both symptoms came back. Occasional jerks when falling asleep where the whole limb moves. Also twitching can be enough to move a finger or toe. Blood reports are normal apart from mildly low vitamin D. I am awaiting to see the neurologist. I am worried that I have multiple sclerosis. I also had blurred vision but no optic neuritis. Dry eyes and need a slight prescription for distance. Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern. Muscle twitching may happen because of multiple reasons. They are common because of benign fasciculation syndrome, anxiety, physical overexertion, and rarely ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). Do you also have muscle weakness, muscle wasting, or tremor? What medicines are you taking? How has been your sleep pattern? Please avoid eating oily, spicy food. Drink plenty of water. At times yoga and meditation also provide relief from such symptoms. Kindly answer the questions to guide you better.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the response. Are they commonly seen in multiple sclerosis? My sister and niece also had muscle twitching. No tremor or wasting. Still doing my running and weights. Had a baby 10 months ago so sleep is not at its best.
