Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have frequent twitching in the muscle above the knee. It has been going on for four to five days. I have tried eating bananas, increasing electrolytes, and hydrating. I have reduced or nearly stopped caffeine too. I do not feel stressed, and I get enough sleep. I do not over-exert my muscle. Still, nothing helps. Please help me with my problem.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thanks for the query. In most cases, it is not a serious issue. Some general measures to control twitching are, If over-exhausted, give it a rest, if sedentary, do exercise, aerobic, and isometric such as stretches, take proper sleep, avoid dehydration, check your calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D levels, cut caffeine and tea (you already did it), sleep adequately, avoid stress and anxiety. Take tablet Baclofen three times a day. It is a muscle relaxant. These measures will resolve the issue usually within few days, sometimes a few weeks. Regarding uncommon and potentially less benign causes, please give me some more details is there pain in the affected muscle? Any trauma to back or lower backache? Are sensations fine in the affected area? Is there muscle wasting? Any known muscular disease in the family? Are these twitch or spasms only occasional? Revert with all the details for better understanding. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Thanks for the reply, doctor,

I do not have pain, and there was no trauma to my back but, I have lower back tightness or soreness that has been going on for a few weeks. Sensations are good in my knee. There is no noticeable muscle wasting and no known muscular disease in my family. It twitches or spasms every 20 to 30 minutes and usually lasts two to three minutes without any pain.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Based on the details you have given, your problem seems to be a benign one. I suggest you take tablet Baclofen thrice daily for five days and try the stretching exercises. Revert after following these. I hope this helped you. Thank you.
