Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My wife is 10 weeks pregnant. Due to lockdown, we are not able to go to the doctor. She feels body pain and started spitting a lot from the fourth week. She also vomits a lot. Please tell me what should I do and also suggest health supplements for her.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Nausea and vomitings are pretty much common during the first three to four months of pregnancy which happens due to sudden hormonal changes. The body pains she feels is also due to the same reason. I am assuming she must be taking Folic acid supplements already after she got to know she was pregnant, or once the scan was done. If not please start them immediately. After 14th week she can stop Folic acid and switch to iron supplements once nausea and vomitings subside. I will be mentioning the tests that she needs to take up as she is already 10 weeks pregnant. There will be an important scan in the coming weeks, that is, between 11 to 13 weeks, which is called NT scan (Nuchal scan) and also a blood test called double marker test which is for the screening of Down's syndrome in the fetus, along with other chromosomal abnormalities called Trisomy 13 and 18. Please do not miss these tests. Let she have small meals at frequent intervals, avoid spicy foods. She must drink more water and fluids to avoid getting dehydrated. Avoid sexual intercourse until 14 weeks to prevent the risk of miscarriages.

You can get back to me if you got any further queries.

The Probable causes

Pregnancy-induced nausea and vomiting.

Investigations to be done

NT scan (11-13 weeks). Dual marker test (11-13 weeks).

Treatment plan

Tablet Folvite 5 mg daily, Doxinate plus (Doxylamine, Pyridoxine and Folic acid) two tablets at bedtime for 15 days (it reduces nausea and morning sickness). Tablet Emset SOS 8 mg before food, if vomiting is uncontrolled. Syrup Gelusil two teaspoons thrice daily 15 minutes before food for one week.

Preventive measures

Small meals at frequent intervals. Avoid spicy foods. Drink more water and fluids to avoid getting dehydrated. Avoid sexual intercourse untill 14 weeks to prevent the risk of miscarriages.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
