My re-root canal triggered chronic headaches. How to treat them?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had my right upper fifth tooth RCT (Root Canal Treatment) eight months ago. It was also sensitive and painful following the root canal treatment. I also took the entire prescribed medication dose.

However, after 40 days, I returned to the doctor to discuss the issue. He simply changed the filling material in my tooth, but this did not solve the problem. I went to a different doctor for an examination after a few months.

He did Re - RCT, but after a few days, I was in excruciating pain on the right side of my head and above my right eye. When I went back to him, he said it would be better in 40 days, but it has not.

I traveled to near by city and obtained a Tegral tablet from a local doctor. I used it for more than a month, but it caused my head pain to disappear and my tooth pain began. When I stopped taking Tegral, my tooth pain went away, but I started getting headaches.

He informed me that my trigeminal nerve has been injured and was not healing properly. On X-ray, RCT appears normal. How can i get rid of this problem?

Please help.

Hello, Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern. I am sorry for the problems you are facing. It is difficult to make comments on the RCT(root canal treatment).

Maybe you have a cracked tooth. The upper right four might be cracked and need an RCT. Neuralgia pain is different from dental pain. It is sharp shooting, lasts only a few seconds, and feels like an electric shock.

But there is no pain during sleep. If you have similar symptoms, then you should continue Tegral (carbamazepine). You may have migraine as well. It affects the side of the head and lasts for a long.

You may need to see a neuro medicine specialist. Please let me know if you need help or have any other queries.

Regards.
