I get frequent numbness on the left side of my head. Kindly help.

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I feel numbness on the top and a small part on the top left side of my head. Sometimes it is a bit frozen. It happens randomly and they have increased for the past one month. It has been happening for the past couple of years and I am taking Vitamin B and D supplements.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern and explain that your symptoms are suggestive of nummular headache, which is a benign type of headache. For this reason, there is no reason to panic.

If the headache gets more frequent, I would recommend starting treatment with Gabapentin. But, there are no alarm signs (red flags) suggestive of any serious medical condition which would need brain imaging.

I hope this helps.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

The thing is that I do not feel pain at all. It just feels numb with some other weird feeling that I cannot explain. The reason why I am so concerned is I had many head traumas. A year ago, I busted it on metal support on the ground. I believe I was scared of aneurysm since that feeling at the top of my head is somewhat scary.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Brain aneurysms do not cause such symptoms. They may lead to throbbing headaches or seizures, but no such situation.

On the other hand, the numbness is related to the possible pinched small nerve in the head, typical of nummular headache (mainly characterized by tingling sensation and numbness in a small coin-shaped portion on the head). This situation could be related to the head trauma (maybe the skin injury in the scalp has affected a little nerve in this area).

Anyway, considering the repeated head trauma, I would find it reasonable to plan for a brain MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), helping put your mind to peace.

I hope this helps.
