Can obesity cause fatigue and low energy in a 35-year-old?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 35 years old and overweight, and recently, even basic activities feel much harder than they should. Walking short distances, standing in lines, and even doing household chores leave me feeling exhausted.

  • Why do simple tasks feel so tiring at my weight and age?

  • Is this only because of obesity, or could there be another underlying problem?

  • If I lose weight now, is it likely that my energy levels will improve?

  • Could my body already have sustained long-term damage?

I am concerned that I may be much weaker than expected for a 35-year-old. I often feel embarrassed about being tired all the time, and it is affecting my work and confidence. I no longer feel like myself, and that worries me.

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I am sorry to hear that constant fatigue is affecting daily life, confidence, and overall well-being. Being overweight can certainly contribute to low energy levels because the body has to work harder during basic physical activities.

Excess weight can also affect sleep quality, breathing during sleep, joint comfort, and overall metabolic health, all of which can make even simple tasks feel exhausting.

However, it is important not to assume that weight is the only cause. Other common conditions, such as anemia, thyroid disorders, vitamin deficiencies, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), insulin resistance, chronic stress, anxiety, or depression, can cause similar symptoms and may go unnoticed.

The good news is that these symptoms do not usually indicate permanent damage at the age of 35. Many people experience significant improvements in energy levels, stamina, and mental clarity after addressing any underlying medical conditions and achieving gradual weight loss.

Even a modest reduction in weight, combined with better sleep habits and regular physical activity, can greatly improve day-to-day functioning and overall health.

What is being experienced may be a sign that the body needs medical attention and support rather than a sign of weakness. A proper medical evaluation is recommended to identify any underlying causes and ensure that no important condition is missed.

Routine blood tests, including:

  • A complete blood count (CBC).

  • Thyroid function tests.

  • Blood glucose levels.

  • Vitamin deficiency screening may be helpful in determining the cause of the fatigue.

I hope this is clear, and if you have any questions at any time, please feel free to ask.

Thank you.
