What causes stubborn fat in the belly area in teenagers?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a teenager, male, and I am having central obesity. There is normal body fat everywhere except in my stomach, thighs, and hips. There is fat on the sides also. I have always been fat but recently I started losing weight. I lost fat everywhere except in the central part. Why is it so?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for writing and I understand your concern.

Central obesity is mainly common in diabetic (sugar) patients, but diabetes is not common at such a young age. So, it can be due to your lifestyle habits and less physical activity. If you have started losing weight, then the central fat will also get reduced, but it will take some time. I suggest you follow a healthy, low-calorie diet along with the following:

  1. Exercise regularly and do not sit or sleep immediately after eating.
  1. You should go for a small walk after dinner. People who go to bed just after eating are more prone to gain such central body weight.
  1. Take a light dinner and then go for a walk.

Have you ever checked your sugar level? Please let me know regarding the same.

You can always get back and reach out to me on icliniq.com.

Thank you.
