Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am using clear aligners and have a class 2 overbite. I am around six months into treatment and now using elastics. However, I believe that the orthodontist has done something wrong. I thought the elastics should be from the top canine teeth to the bottom first molar. But my elastics extend from the top back teeth to the bottom canine teeth. Isn't this for class 3 malocclusions? What should I do? I believe it is pulling my bottom teeth back even further. Kindly clarify.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Thank you for writing and I understand your concern.
Elastics are given to provide an additional force in adjusting the teeth to proper relations. There are three types of configurations that can be followed.
Within the same jaw front and back: Given for class I malocclusion
From upper front to lower back: Given in class II malocclusion (The gap between upper and lower is more and upper is in front)
From upper back to lower front: Given in class III malocclusion (Reverse situation in which the lower teeth are more in front or edge to edge with uppers)
By the details you have mentioned, you are absolutely correct. I would suggest you share a few photos of your teeth' side view, front view, and face side view. This would help me understand the extent of the situation and accordingly, I can suggest which elastic configuration to be followed.
Feel free to reach out for further queries or clarifications.
Thank you.
