Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My period is irregular although it comes every month. The cycle length varies every month. Only on a few occasions will I get the same cycle length. For example, my period can come within the range of 29 to 41 days. It might be 29 days this month and 33 days next month. It is so unpredictable and I feel this will affect calculating ovulation for me. Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern. Several hormones regulate a woman's menstrual cycle. Estrogen, progesterone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone, to name a few. There are also some other factors that affect menstruation such as infections and diet. I would like to know if you have any abnormal vaginal discharge? If you have a heavy menstrual flow? If you feel hot in cold environments or cold in hot environments? Investigations you may need to carry out include a hormonal profile, a pelvic ultrasound scan as well as a thyroid function test. I hope I have been of help.

Thank you.

The Probable causes

Infections, inadequate calorie diet, or hormonal imbalance

Investigations to be done

Hormonal profile, thyroid function test, pelvic ultrasound scan

Differential diagnosis

Hormonal imbalance, pelvic inflammatory disease
