What causes a low resting heart rate?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 78-year-old father has had a pacemaker for five years, and it is functioning well. However, his heart is becoming weaker and increasingly dependent on the pacemaker. He now has a low resting heart rate. What causes this, and what is the treatment?

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Usually, if the pacemaker is functioning properly, the heartbeat will match the set rate of the device. If the heart rate is below the set rate, then the pacemaker may not be working correctly. Please have his pacemaker checked by the manufacturer. Additionally, conduct a thyroid function test, serum electrolytes test, and an ECG. You can send me the reports.

Thanks and regards.
