Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My father had a bacterial spine infection around L4/L5 which required surgery. The surgery was to remove the parts of the bone that were attacked by the bacteria, to install bolts and a small fixture to stabilize L4/L5, and to install a drain to remove the pass from the abscess. Since the pain has been ongoing for quite some time, even before the operation, he has been on OxyContin and Morphine for quite some time now. My father is completely high and confused all day long. I would like to know whether this type of pain management is normal.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query.

Based on the information you provided, it is important to note that pain management is highly individualized and should be tailored to each patient's specific needs and circumstances. The appropriate dosage for pain management can vary widely depending on factors such as the severity and type of pain, the patient's medical history, and the potential risks and benefits of different treatment options.

I suggest you follow the instructions mentioned below.

1. Consult with the healthcare team: If you are concerned about your father's pain management, it is important to consult with the doctor. They can guide whether the current dosage is appropriate and whether any adjustments are necessary based on your father's specific circumstances.

2. Understand the potential risks and benefits of opioid use: While opioids can be effective at managing pain, they also carry several potential risks and side effects, including addiction, dependence, and respiratory depression. By working closely with the healthcare team to develop a comprehensive pain management plan that takes these factors into account, you may be able to minimize the risks associated with opioid use.

3. Monitor for signs of addiction or dependence: If your father has been using opioids for an extended period, there is a risk that he may develop addiction or dependence. Be sure to monitor for signs of addiction or dependence, such as increased tolerance, withdrawal symptoms, or compulsive drug-seeking behavior. If you suspect that your dad may be struggling with addiction or dependence, it is important to consult with the healthcare team and explore alternative pain management options.

4. Consider alternative pain management options: Depending on the nature and severity of your father's pain, there may be alternative pain management options that are less reliant on opioids. These could include non-opioid medications, physical therapy, acupuncture, or other complementary therapies. By working closely with the healthcare team to develop a comprehensive pain management plan that incorporates a range of different treatment options, you may be able to minimize the risks associated with opioid use while still effectively managing your father's pain.

5. Support your father through the recovery process: Recovery from surgery can be challenging both physically and emotionally. By providing emotional support and encouragement, helping your father stay active and engaged in his recovery process, and working closely with the healthcare team to address any concerns or questions that arise along the way, you may be able to help your dad navigate the recovery process more smoothly and minimize any potential complications or setbacks.

Hope it helps.

Thanks and regards.
