Do worms in stool need parasite infection treatment?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been sick with parasites for the past six months, and I would like to know if you are able to prescribe medication to get rid of them or to tell me what to tell my family doctor to prescribe me, as I am having a hard time getting an appointment. I have been taking wormwood and black walnut.

My symptoms are diarrhea off and on, blood in stools, worms in stools (white, threadlike, and more than 60 mm in length), dizziness, fever, chills, headache on and off, inflammation in the body, urinating often, cough at night, and stomach pain in the stomach after meals, especially with sugar and dairy. I stopped eating all dairy and sugar, and had very painful ankles at night when I went to bed.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

It is positive for Entamoeba histolytica and negative for other parasites. Let me know if it is mentioned positively for other parasites as well. Now, you are infected with two parasites, one is Entamoeba histolytica, and the other is worms. Here, we cannot directly prescribe you medicine, but you should request your physician for tablet Bandy plus (Albendazole 400 plus Ivermectin) once at bedtime and repeat after two weeks.

Also, for Entamoeba, you should request a tablet of Metronidazole 750 mg three times a day for seven days, along with some antacids like tablet Pantoprazole DSR 40 mg before breakfast once a day for seven days. For stomach pain, you may request a tablet of Dicyclomine 20 mg or Buscopan 10 mg SOS up to two to three times a day.

For a cough, you may have syrup Alex (Dextromethorphan), two teaspoons whenever needed, up to three times a day. Also, get it confirmed the type of worms that you see in stools for any modifications in dosage. For this, you may get a repeat stool examination done or show a microbiologist a parasite to identify. This should resolve your issue.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your answer.

I forgot to mention I can feel the worms moving in my body all the time, and they give me small muscle spasms, I think, when they die from the wormwood.

In my country, we can only get Ivermectin in horse paste. I want to know the following:

  1. Would that be safe to take for humans, and if so, what would be the dose?
  2. Could I take Combantrin until I see my doctor, and what would be the dose?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

So avoid Ivermectin. You may have Combantrin, which is an alternative to Albendazole. The usual dose for most parasites is 100 mg (125 mg is also fine) twice daily for three days. Also, you should have Metronidazole, as I mentioned above, for other parasites. Do not forget to have antacids, Pantoprazole, or Lansoprazole along with these.

I hope this helps.

Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
