Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Can I use the Daktacort hydrocortisone cream bought over the counter to treat a penile yeast infection? Some online websites say it is not suitable for genital areas. Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Daktacort cream, a combination of Hydrocortisone and Miconazole medications, may be helpful in treating penile yeast infection, also called Candida balanitis.

Using them in sensitive private or mucosal areas, including penile skin, is not harmful. However, they are always advised to be used in minimal quantity and applied in the thinnest layer possible on the affected area, only avoiding the unaffected or normal skin. They also suggested being used only at night once daily and for a maximum period of two weeks. Following the same, there may be a break in medication taken for the next two weeks and then continued for a short duration.

However, apart from the usual instructions, I suggest the following:

1. Daktarin gel which is Miconazole gel alone initially for four weeks, twice daily on the affected area.

2. Tablet Fluconazole 400 mg single dose may be taken and repeated once again after two more weeks. Both may be consumed orally after dinner.

Following four weeks, Daktacort cream may be used at night only for two weeks, as mentioned above. After that, Daktarin gel may be used in the morning at the same time. Starting with Hydrocortisone cream may lead to lowered immunity and flaring up of yeast infection in case of fungal elements. Please consult a specialist doctor, discuss with them and start taking the medications with their consent.

I would also suggest you provide an image of the affected area for inspection and assessment to provide a confirmatory diagnosis and appropriate and further management options for the same. In the absence of an image, it may not be easy to provide a confirmatory diagnosis.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
