Can an erupting wisdom tooth cause swelling and pain in the gums?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am experiencing a swelling in the posterior teeth and I do not have any wisdom teeth. I got a injury inside my mouth near that region and it resulted in severe pain and it became worse the following day. Please help me get relief.

Hello Sir,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The present condition explained by you is indicating towards injury to gums that resulted in soreness. There is presence of inflammation of the gums in the posterior tooth region, which is known as pericoronitis. These symptoms may also arise at the time of eruption of the third molar. I would advise you to get a full mouth X-ay done known as OPG (orthopantomogram). Anti inflammatory medicines can be taken for three days. You must follow these preventive measures -

  1. Avoid brushing in that area for around 10 days.
  2. Toothbrushing can be done in the rest of the region.
  3. Do warm saltwater rinses to get rid of food debris stuck in that region. Use a good antiseptic mouthwash.
  4. Pain relieving gels can be applied to the affected area 15 minutes before meals.
  5. If swelling and pain does not subside after a week then evaluation of the wisdom tooth for eruption should be done.

Take care,

Regards.
