Which medications would help a patient overcome the persistent pain and inflammation in lower wisdom teeth?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I recently went to the dentist to fill one of my upper teeth. That went fine. However, the same day my lower jaw wisdom teeth started to hurt a little. I ignored it, but the day after, it was inflamed and was painful while swallowing. I made an emergency dental appointment and got prescribed medicines Metronidazole 400 mg for five days for pericoronitis. I took this and finished the course today, but the pain was not relieved, so I went back to the dentist the same day and was given Amoxicillin 500 mg for five days. I am also taking Ibuprofen 400 mg for pain relief along with the tablet Allopurinol 300 mg for uric acid.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

Both the cases were unrelated. Wisdom teeth infection may be due to the lack of space for the wisdom teeth to grow at the corner. I do not know whether the root canal treatment will be helpful. If it is pericoronitis, then either the wisdom teeth have to be extracted, or any overlying gums near the tooth should be cut off to allow proper cleaning of the area. Use warm salt water and gargle twice daily or weekly to get some relief. Attach a picture of the area for better diagnosis.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
