What could be the cause of a red rash above the lip line?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a red rash slightly above my lip line. It is dry and sometimes a little itchy. I did not use to have it, but it started around the time my partner got on acne medication, and it does not go away, with the exception of when I traveled abroad for vacation. For some reason, it went away when I traveled. I have gone to two dermatologists, but I am looking for an actual solution other than it is stress. I have been stressed before, and this did not happen.

Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Your concern is perioral dermatitis. It may be secondary to cheilitis as well. Also, It may be due to the following:

1. Cosmetics like lip balm.

2. Contact allergens like a new toothpaste.

3. An irritation is secondary to mouthwash and denitrifies.

4. Exposure to an extreme environment.

5. Food allergies like citrus fruits, nuts, pineapple, garlic, etc.

6. Medications like retinoids.

7. Dehydration.

8. Irritation is rarely due to mouthpieces of musical instruments.

You can try using a hydrating lip balm. I also suggest using a Hydrocortisone cream until the redness subsides. Do not worry. It is curable.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
